The Rotterdam Summer Carnival began in 1984 as an initiative by carnival artists from Curaçao and Aruba who wanted to celebrate Caribbean culture in the Netherlands. Their goal was to bring the vibrant traditions of Caribbean carnivals—music, dance, and colorful parades—into a European context.
The first Caribbean carnival parade in the Netherlands took place in 1982 in a small Dutch city, but the event moved to Rotterdam a year later, where it quickly found a permanent home. Rotterdam, a major international port city known for its diversity, became the perfect setting for a multicultural celebration.
What started as an Antillean festival soon grew to include influences from Brazil, Cape Verde, Suriname, and many other cultures. This expansion turned the carnival into an international event that showcases a rich tapestry of music, dance, and costume traditions.
Today, the Rotterdam Summer Carnival is renowned for its spectacular street parade, the election of a carnival queen and king, and high-energy Caribbean music and dance performances. Recognized for its cultural and social significance, the festival was named Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Netherlands in 2019 and was officially inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2023.
