CONFERENCE: "What is Africa to me now?" in Liège, Belgium

A 3day conference on the African continent and its literary diasporas will be held at the University of Liège in March 2013. Part of the conference there will be a photo exhibition by Johny Pitts. Invited speakers are Chika Unigwe, Caryl Phillips and Jackie Kay.

UK: White man cleared of racial abuse after using N-word 'as term of endearment'

A British court has cleared a white man who shouted the word "nigger" at a black man of racial abuse, after he claimed he was a rap music fan who used the term as an endearment.

Black artists in Germany share their stories in new book

The book is entitled "The Little Book of Big Visions: How to be an Artist and Revolutionize the World" and it's edited by Sandrine Micossé-Aikins and Sharon Dodua Otoo.

Synopsis: Black artists in Germany find themselves – necessarily – in a position in which subversiveness and resistance – implicit and explicit – become essential strategies to be used in their work if they wish to survive in this predominantly white context. However, after resistance is no longer necessary, what could be the vision then? And what is the central role of the artist in shaping or creating these visions?

The Awards ceremony paid tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (Gomes was the translator for Bernice King and for the American delegation at the Troféu Raça Negra.)
