The Day of Black Awareness ("Dia da Consciência Negra" in Portuguese) is celebrated annually on November 20 in Brazil as a day on which to reflect upon the injustices of slavery (from the first transport of African slaves to Brazil in 1594) and to celebrate the contributions to society and to the nation by Brazilian citizens of African descent. German court bans police racial profiling
A court in Germany has told the police they may not carry out identity checks on people on the basis of their skin color. There's disagreement among the police as to whether they welcome the ruling.

Video: Sundance winning director Ava Duvernay is at the Amsterdam Film Week
Ava DuVernay is one of the voices of the new generation of black filmmakers. And this year she became the first African-American woman to win a best directing award at the Sundance Film Festival. She won for "Middle of Nowhere," a drama about a young black woman named Ruby who puts her life on hold while her husband is in prison.
